The best strategy for this game is not to build a lot of towers, but to upgrade the ones you have already build. You have tree chiosses when it comes to upgrade your towers: speed, damage and range, each of this is important and each can have a huge impact.

If you are new to tower defense games here is a quick tip: try and build a few different towers and upgrade them. The more towers you have the smaller the chance to win, also keep in mind that your gold from one level will be ported to the next level so don't spend it if you don't really need to.
